WebDav lets you treat a web server as a real writable file server.

Lots of popular tools have built-in support for DAV including Windows XP, Office, Macromedia tools, Adobe tools, etc.

Apache are producing SLIDE, a DAV content management system. Then there's SubVersion a DAV based wanna-be replacement for CVS.

If you like WebDAV, check out the BarracudaDrive home server with integrated WebDAV server. http://barracudaserver.com/products/BarracudaDrive/

A really easy to use and cool WebDAV client is Total Commander: http://www.ghisler.com/
