Read-only Reference Views - You cannot make a change to this view - This can be either Floating or Frozen - Floating reflects all changes in the parent view. New files and changes to existing files in the parent view are visible to the child view (is that a valid StarTeam term) - Frozen is a readonly snapshot. New files and changes to existing files in the parent view are NOT reflected in the child view

Read-write Reference Views - Another way of looking at the same view - Changes to the view are reflected in the parent view - Generally used to show a subset of folder to a group of users (e.g showing only Requirement Specification, Functional Specification and Testcases to Business Users)

View Profile - Applying workstation dependent limitations to the view - E.g., EOL in Unix and Windows are different. If you are building a UNIX version and a Windows version of a product from the same view, you may need a profile for each

Alternate working folder - Changing "Default working folder" for a view may not be a good option most of the times since that change affects everyone using that view - This option is ideal if you don't want Use "default working folder" (bcoz u don't have the drive or space in that drive) - This option is specific to your login and workstation. Will not work if you login with your id on a different machine

Branching - Branching can be done through "Views" - E.g of branching : Lets say you have migrated your code to production in Q1 2005 and you continue with your changes for next release. What will you do if there is a bug in Q1 2005 release? You can't take the latest files since they contain additional enhancements that have not been acceptance tested. This is where Branching is useful. You maintain a main version (aka Trunk) and branch out from that. Use main version for fixing bugs on the migrated code and use branch version for enhancements. Merge branch with main version once the code is ready for Production migration.
