The idea is to make it possible to not only integrate JSPWiki in other applications or websites but also the search capabilities. A RPC call returning the search results can be used to make it possible to search through a whole website including the wiki pages.
This is a good idea, and we will certainly support it at some point. In 2.5 SearchManager already exposes a JSON API; but it could be extended.
